چکیده

Using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope, sensitive measurements of the H2O megamaser in NGC 3079 are presented. During 2000 – 2001, 'high velocity' features are seen that are red-shifted up to 225 km s −1 with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy (VLSR ∼ 1120 km s −1). Symmetrically bracketing the systemic velocity, the H2O emission covers a velocity range of ∼450 km s −1 with only one potential narrow gap (∼20 km s −1) near the systemic velocity itself. Velocity drifts of individual components are not convincingly detected. It is shown that the presence of red-shifted emission and the absence of detectable velocity drifts are not inconsistent with the existence of a rotating circumnuclear maser disk at the very center of the galaxy. Significant differences in the overall line profile compared to NGC 4258 and a complex morphology of the radio continuum leave, however, space for scepticism.

The obscured circumnuclear region of the outflow galaxy NGC 3079

Images of the central region of the almost edge-on Sc galaxy NGC 3079 in the J , H and K-bands and in the v = 1→0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen are presented. The inner few kiloparsecs of NGC 3079 exhibit a large range of nearinfrared colours caused by varying contributions from direct and scattered stellar light, emission from hot dust and extinction gradients. Our results show that interpre...

Constraints on the circumnuclear absorber in NGC1052 from Radio and X-ray observations

Multi-frequency studies of the pc-scale twin-jet in NGC 1052 have revealed the presence of a dense circumnuclear absorber obscuring the central engine. We analyze the brightness temperature distribution along the approaching, eastern pc-scale jet of NGC 1052 based on observational data obtained with the VLBA at 5, 8.4, 22 and 43 GHz. We present evidence for a geometry in which the central absor...

First Detection of Millimeter/submillimeter Extragalactic H 2 O Maser Emission

We report the first detection of an extragalactic millimeter wavelength H 2 O maser at 183 GHz towards NGC 3079 using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), and a tentative submillimeter wave detection of the 439 GHz maser towards the same source using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). These H 2 O transitions – 2 – are known to exhibit maser emission in star-forming regions and evolved stars. N...

The Twin – Jet System in NGC 1052 : VLBI - Scrutiny of the Obscuring Torus

NGC 1052 offers the possibility to study the obscuring torus around a supermassive black hole, predicted by the standard model of active galactic nuclei, over a wide range of wavelengths from the radio to the X-ray regime. We present a detailed VLBI study of the parsec-scale structure of the " twin-jet " system in NGC 1052 in both total and polarized intensity and at multiple frequencies. We re...

We have conducted VLBI observations at sub-parsec resolution of water maser and radio continuum emission in the nucleus of the nearby active galaxy NGC 3079. The 22 GHz maser emission arises in compact (∼ 0.01 pc at a distance of 16 Mpc) clumps, distributed over ∼ 2 pc along an axis that is approximately aligned with the major axis of the galactic disk. The Doppler velocities of the water maser...
